Spring Cleaning: 5 tips to get you started

It is that time of year again, time to start spring cleaning. There is just something about spring that makes me want to get stuff done, the warmer weather automatically puts me in a good mood and gets me motivated. I love giving our home a good spruce up and getting stuck into spring cleaning after the cold winter months. Our home looks and feels so refreshed after it’s had a good spring clean and I wanted to share 5 tips to help you get started.

Where to start when Spring Cleaning your home

#1 Make a list

Grab a pen and paper and go for a walk around your house, try to look past the regular cleaning you might do and look for jobs or areas that have maybe been neglected lately. It doesn’t matter where you start, as long as you get started and stick to your list.

#2 Gather your supplies

Put together a cleaning caddy, there’s nothing worse than having to stop what your doing and go looking for what you need. I recommend getting the cleaning products, brushes and sponges and any appliances you need together. I was recently sent a Vax Blade cordless Pet Pro stick vacuum and Steam Fresh Combi steam mop to review. These little gems were the perfect addition to my spring cleaning caddy, this is what I thought of them.

Vax Blade Pet Pro Cordless Handstick Vacuum Cleaner: Review

This stick vacuums doesn’t just get my tick of approval but my boys as well. Since the Blade’s arrival it’s been easy to get my 8 and 5 year old to help with the vacuuming, actually we’ve had to referee a few fights as to who’s turn it was to use it. The design is light weight, making it easy for anyone to use. My boys of course love the boost function for added power and I love that they are able to vacuum an area efficiently and effectively!

Mr 5 having his turn

The last thing I want to add to my spring cleaning list is more cleaning, I usually give the job of emptying the vacuum to my husband but I am happy to report that the Blade Pet Pro is so easy to empty that even I’ve been doing it.

Have you ever timed yourself vacuuming? Let me just say that 45 minutes allows for a lot of vacuuming. The easy to read battery life gauge turned into a great challenge to see how much we could get done before we ran out of power. One of the most challenging things I found with The Blade Pet Pro is where to hang it for charging? We finally settled on a wall in our garage as it’s easy to access.

Vax Steam Fresh Combi: Review

Did you know that Vax is more than just a vacuum company? In fact they offer a complete range of floor cleaning products and products for all in home cleaning tasks. I love cleaning with steam and if you’ve never used steam to clean before here are some of the benfits. * Steam cleaning is eco-friendly – no chemicals are involved

* Steam cleaning uses heat to disinfect or sanitise nearly all household surfaces

* Steam evaporates quickly, so surfaces dry faster than when cleaned with water

* Steam cleaning is excellent for those difficult-to-clean cracks and crevices

It’s been years since I’ve owned a steam cleaner, back when I first moved out of home I had a big bulky yellow steam mop with multiple attachments. The trouble with it was it wasn’t easy to set up or use. What Vax have created with the Steam Fresh Combi is a dream to set up and use. Again I had my boys helping out with the ‘hot’ mop as they like to call it. The Vax Steam Fresh Floor Cleaner is designed to heat up and clean fast. It worked a treat on our tile floors. The power of steam cleaning means less elbow grease, as dirt and grime break down while cleaning.

This little gem isn’t just limited to floors it also contains a detachable handheld steamer, which can be used all around the home. I loved the handheld device, it was light weigh and seems to have an attachment to suit most of my cleaning needs. The grout brush and concentration nozzle are by far my go to favourites. My husband got in on the spring cleaning steam action favouring the Squeegee tool and the upholstery tool. What I love most about the attachments is how conveniently they can be stored and organised on the back of the mop.

Steam cleaning So Freaking Organised

The 260ml water tank gives about 15 mintues of steam time. We got quite into spring cleaning all those little neglected areas of our home and were surprised by just how much more dirt we were able to remove from areas we thought were clean. We filled the tank multiple times, each time we were impressed with the 20 second heat up time that allowed us to get straight back into it.

Using the concentration nozzle to clean bathroom taps.

#3 Declutter

Did you know that decluttering reduces our housework by 40%? If that isn’t reason enough to get you to clear your clutter than I don’t know what is. I’ve made it a habit to include regular decluttering as part of our weekly routine, you can read more about Throw it Thursday post here. I can’t tell you the difference owning less has had on our lives. An easy way to start is to set up some boxes or baskets to help you sort things as you declutter.

  • Donate – Drop them off to charity bin or donation station near you.
  •  Sell – Ebay, Gumtree and Facebook market place are a few way you can make extra money from your unwanted clutter. If the thought of listing online makes you nervous how about a good old fashioned garage or car boot sale
  • Return – Make an effort to return any borrowed or left behind items
  • Rubbish – Plain and simple if its broken, doesn’t work or is rubbish – throw it out!

#4 Get the family involved

We have the view in our house that chores are each family members way of contributing to the running of the home. While you might be thinking it’s not worth the grumbling or the fight to get them to help out, I’m a big believer in everyone contributing and therfore appreciating the space in which they live. Team work makes the dream work!

#5 Make it Fun

If your’e going to do it and you want to get the family involved you may as well make it fun. Yes spring cleaning is a chore and this won’t be your traditional definition of fun but try putting on some favourite music, or turn it into a challenge to see how much you can achieve in a set time. If you started with a list why not add a reward to the list for when everything is completed? If you’re lacking motivation, I shared some ideas that might help you get your motivation kick started here.

Now all you need to do is decide when you’re going to start!

Happy Cleaning
